My name is Clare, Im a printmaker from western NY currently residing in the Bay Area as I work on my MFA...

For the last few months I have been screen-printing hand cut envelopes and packing them with hand printed stickers using designs found in common mail: utility bills, parking tickets, credit card mailings ect... as well as lottery tickets and instructional diagrams from a variety of sources, the idea behind "Junk Mail" is that I realized that I was spending hours every week sifting through this so called "important" mail much of which just gets thrown away or recycled immediately. My intention is to bring attention to the messages we receive through the mail, how they are scrutinized, and how they serve to promote a culture of consumerism and debt, with little hope outside of a lotto jackpot winning.

My guidelines for the project are that I use only reclaimed materials, so I have been getting paper from recycling centers, old libraries and craigslist, so the majority of materials are reused.

My vision for the project is to mail out these envelopes and encourage recipients to put up the stickers anywhere they want and to perhaps join the project by creating mail art that questions the idea of "junk mail" or "important" mail, questioning the process of selling addresses for advertising purposes, the waste of paper for these mass mailings ect...

With that said.

If you are interested in receiving a piece "Junk Mail" or you want to join the project and create a piece of mail yourself .
contact me at clareszyd@yahoo.com
( maybe there is a story about it - you never liked to wear it, it was
a gift, you wore it in an important moment) - i will be pleased about
it.
my plan is to put all together in a new way - so that there will be one dress and one poem at the end for one performance/ film/installation, but it is not clear how it will be exactly - at least the most important thing depends on you. maybe the dress and the poem will go on a journey again, maybe they will come back to you, maybe you get a message from them, maybe you won´t see them again, maybe....the ideas become more and more with every package i get from you what ever will happen - i let you know. and be sure; whenever you give something - you get something.
the artwork will be shown at the diploma exhibition of the FH Ottersberg (Germany) on march 21th 2008.
you will find a documentation on my tribe-blog.

i hope that it will be possible to support me,

I thought you all might be interested in watching this free independent film that showcases a couple from New York who only communicates through art, and mail art, during their entire relationship. Four Eyed Monsters, I am sure some of you have heard of it through the indie circuit, is full of beautiful animation and aesthetically pleasing editing techniques that make me appreciate it for that alone!

It will only be up for a week here: http://foureyedmonsters.com/watch/

So check it out, read all about their story, watch the podcasts, and if you become a huge fan... buy the film through the “Buy DVDs/Downloads” link, as it goes directly to a good cause- getting the filmmakers out of debt and supporting the indie art community! enjoy!

My name is Madeline Osborne.
I am an artist, assemblage artist, mail artist, altered book artist, digital artist, and general idiot at large!

My beloved husband, Dennis, is my No.1 fan, cheering section, and financial investor, encouraging my artistic interests and creations.

It is through his direct involvement and support, that I was able to recently acquire the domain name, www.AssemblageArt.Org, and his direct assistance, that I have been able to get the AAO Forums up and online, at http://assemblageart.org/phpBB2/index.php .

You can see my adventure with Mail art over there, at: http://assemblageart.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24 as well as my adventures in building a website (can't just glue what you want together, darn it!), as I try to get the pages built, linked, and functional for the entire AAO site by March 1, 2006.

Spring is coming. I like the idea of a Postcard "Exquisite Corpse" Round Robin.
Groups of 3 this time around.
Take 2 postcards, divide them into 3 parts, and design/create on one section of each card.
Then mail the cards to the two other people on your list.
When you receive the 2 cards (one from each of your fellow members), complete one of sections of that card, and send it on to the 3rd member.
When the 3rd section is completed, mail it back to the Original Sender.
TOPIC for ROUND 1: GLOBAL WARMING WINTER.

I need 2 fellow members to join me.
C'mon, who's in, and how many groups can we get together?

Hello,

My name is Amy and I’m in the planning stages of organizing a community art project and I need your help.

The Project is mail art and I hope to involve as many artists (yes, you are) in the Portland area as possible. The intention is to collect all the art into an installation and submit a proposal to have it shown in one of several Portland locations. I would like this to be a true community effort from the ground up.

At this point what I’d like from you is input, I want to hear every idea you’ve got:) I’d like to begin actual mailings by the first week of june, so please submit ideas before then.

Here are some of the things I’d like you to consider and give opinions on.

Format: We need a format that is very mail-able and lends it self to display. I’ve been considering either postcards or an accordion fold book where everyone decorates a page.

Theme: A unifying theme might be nice, this could be a word or phrase. What kind of things do you think about when you’re moving around the city? What defines your commuity? All ideas considered

Publicity: How do we make sure everyone who has an interest hears about the project?

So, Please respond to this thread so we’re all in one place: http://mailartproject.tribe.net/

Thanks for participating,
Amy

I'm soon to be moving to portland and I found several organizations that accept proposal for installatiions so what I was wondering is would anyone here be interested in organizing and finding a home for an installation of mail art. I was thinking of asking as many artists as we can reach to make a "postcard", possibly themed, and then designing a display. So um, anyone wanna join me?

Postcard Project

i live in a group of 15 fantastic people. since the beginning of the year we have participated in a weekly workshop taught by one of our housemates. so far, amongst otherthings, we have made a portrait of chopin by the collage method, we have painted a stone age universe picture and we have learnt how to juggle! on february 23, i have signed up to be the guest professor and i would like to introduce my friends to the joys of mail art. first i will explain what mail art is as best i can, with the help of some beautiful things people have sent me, and then we will each make a unique postcard. i don't know what media it will be in as we have carpenters, painters, water colourists, collagists etc etc but i am sure they will all be very special. then we will address the postcards and i will send them off to whoever has sent me their address. this is where you come in, gentle reader. the idea would be for you to send me an email saying you are interested in this scheme, and to give me your address. then sit still, remembering of course to breathe, until you receive a postcard in the mail. next, make one yourself (however you
want, i think its nice if you are inspired by what you receive) and send it back to the name and address on the postcard. hopefully, the result is that everyone gets an original piece of art and everyone is happy.

hooray! i am asking for your adress in advance so we can get the postcards named and addressed on the same day. everyone who is interested will get sent a card.

i am excited about this project and hope it works out. if you are not interested in this particular mail art project but would like to correspond with me, that is also cool, my address is below. cheers!
summary:
the idea - give me your address and wait for a postcard made on feb23 to arrive. when it does, send a postcard you made back to the person who sent it! easy peasy!
media - postcard, open theme
materials - whatever works
payment- what?
documentation - you get to keep the postcard sent to you!
On the 22nd of December 2004, Kyle Van Horn taped a disposable camera to a piece of black foamcore and inscribed upon it the following message: "ATTENTION POSTAL WORKERS! Please help us with our project. As this camera travels across the country we want photos of all whom it encounters. Please take a photo before you pass it along. Thank you!"

He then bordered it with attention-getting red tape and dropped it off at a post office in Baltimore, MD. A week later, it arrived at my home in Portland, OR with all 27 exposures taken. What follows in the extended entry is all 24 pictures that came out, in the order they were taken (3 of the 27 were blank.) Some have had minor levels adjustments for the sake of visibility, but they have not been color-corrected or cropped in any significant way.
