Hello! Let's get this place SHAKIN'! POSTCARD EXCHANGE!

topic posted Thu, February 9, 2006 - 10:26 AM by  Maddy
Hi all!
My name is Madeline Osborne.
I am an artist, assemblage artist, mail artist, altered book artist, digital artist, and general idiot at large!

My beloved husband, Dennis, is my No.1 fan, cheering section, and financial investor, encouraging my artistic interests and creations.

It is through his direct involvement and support, that I was able to recently acquire the domain name, www.AssemblageArt.Org, and his direct assistance, that I have been able to get the AAO Forums up and online, at assemblageart.org/phpBB2/index.php .

You can see my adventure with Mail art over there, at: assemblageart.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php as well as my adventures in building a website (can't just glue what you want together, darn it!), as I try to get the pages built, linked, and functional for the entire AAO site by March 1, 2006.

Spring is coming. I like the idea of a Postcard "Exquisite Corpse" Round Robin.
Groups of 3 this time around.
Take 2 postcards, divide them into 3 parts, and design/create on one section of each card.
Then mail the cards to the two other people on your list.
When you receive the 2 cards (one from each of your fellow members), complete one of sections of that card, and send it on to the 3rd member.
When the 3rd section is completed, mail it back to the Original Sender.
TOPIC for ROUND 1: GLOBAL WARMING WINTER.

I need 2 fellow members to join me.
C'mon, who's in, and how many groups can we get together?

For those of you new to the term, "Exquisite Corpse" is based upon a parlor game in the 1800's where a phrase would be started, continued, and completed by three different people, with only a portion of the preceeding contributions visible to the next person. You can read more about it here:
    www.exquisitecorpse.com/definition.html

You should try to incorporate 1/4" of the image edging you portion into your creation, so that there is some continuity to the resulting cohesive image, as well as being free to add additional content to the entire card...you may receive a card with some content spilling over into your section. That's fine, too, just don't "hog" the whole card...lol!

        i'll play-
i think i will have to re-read the directions when the time comes...
        • Hi Jan, Hi Faern!

          Okay!
          1. First, we need to message each other and exchange mailing addresses.
          2. Get 2 postcards (or make your own, min. 5"x3.5", max. 6"x4.25"), and divide them with pencil lines into 3 sections.
          3. Choose one section on each postcard and decorate it to taste.
Topic: Global Warming Winter...interpret it as you will.
          4. Mail 1 card to each of your fellow group members. Make sure your return address is on the mailing side, only the sending address will be changed.
          5. When you recieve a card, using 1/4" of the edge(s) of the other section(s), incorporate YOUR section into the piece.
          6. Mail the cards to the 3rd member of the group, replacing your address on the front with their address, leaving the return address intact.
          7. Repeat step # 5, and send the card back to the original sender, replacing your address with the address in the Return to section.

          Let the silliness begin!!!!

To all other members: C'mon guys, step up to the Mail Art plate, and join in! It won't hurt too much, I promise!

          Regards,
          ~Maddy

Today is Friday, I will try to get my cards in the mail by tomorrow.

OMG you are really fast. I have 4 goddess dolls I have to finish by this coming weekend (the 18th) Then I will be able to do my postcards. Already have ideas swimming in my head though.
            • No, Jan, I'm more enthusiastic than Reality allows for...lol!
You go ahead and finish the Goddess dolls! This is purely a sideline entertainment!
I'm at a bit of an impasse for the next day or so, as I whacked my left middle finger knuckle on the hand into a door jamb running for the phone...OW! It's swollen, blue, probably a hairline fracture, which is slooowwwwing me down across the boards. Plus, I have a new furnace being installed tomorrow, as well as regular Life, which always imposes when I want to be Creative!

But, there is NO deadline for the cards. When you get them, sure, try to get them back out before they become U.F.O.s (Un-Finished Objects) flying around your house, but beyond that, NO pressure, okay?

              ~Maddy
              • My cards are in the mail today!

                Wed, February 15, 2006 - 8:17 AM
                Hi guys!
Well, they are in the mailbox, awaiting the postman.
                NO HURRY, NO WORRY!

I know how Life can interfere with Time frames. Remeber, we're supposed to enjoy this little adventure!

I drew out margins on mine, but feel free to ignore them. If you want to "blend" from one section to the next, you have 1/4" markings. I marked all 3 sections, before choosing the center of each card.

You can also interpret "Global Warming Winter" however you like. My sections seem somewhat dire, although I wasn't really intending that. I chose images that I thought were a bit humorous...
I've thrown a picture of them in the photos section, so you can glimpse what's headed your way.

If possible, I'd like to have these done by March 21, as that's the first day of Spring, effectively ending our Global Warming Winter, but we will see how things progress.

                ~Maddy

                  sorry for the delay-

Mail Art is something of a rare thing, and part of this is because our Lives today are far more filled with things to do.

Congratulations on getting them out! That in itself is an accomplishment.

                    How are you doing, Jan?

                        Hi Faern and Maddy!!
You should've both already recived my cards by now, I have recieved one from each of you and will be working on them this week. I Love the way Faern used a photo as the postcard base, I would've never thought of that. Way cool.

                          Hey Jan!
I got your card today! Uber Cool! One edge got torn loose, but is still attached, so I can repair it.
I think the term "snail mail" is becoming the postal service's mantra...
I'm still getting over this head cold, but am on the mend. Hopefully I will be able to add to your card and get it in the mail to Faern by Monday (read that, Faern? You'll have another card soon!) I'll scan it first and post it.

                          This is fun!
Those of you not playing are missing out, believe me!

I know you've gotten one completed card back, because I sent it. Hopefully Faern's sent you her completed one too.

Where are the two cards you are supposed to send out?

                                  hey now be nice.
what about finding out if something could be going on in her life that could be delaying the work before being so accusatory?
she could be sick, someone in her family could be having stuff that they need her for that is way more important than a postcard exchange.
i know you didn't mean anything by that, but here online when we only read words and not expressions it is difficult to discern between just saying something and being rude.

                                    Faern,
I wasn't adressing you, and regardless YOUR impression of my message I was NOT being Not Nice. Trust me, had I wanted to be Not Nice, my message would have CLEARLY reflected that...

Jan's last message was in March, for a project started in Februrary. Short of her OWN death, 4 months is usually sufficent time to either post a msg, saying she's not doing it, or just sticking a stamp on the cards, and sending them back. Considereing that she now has at LEAST one completed piece of Mail Art, she could at least post to say Thank you.

You will find in Life that YOUR impressions of a situation does not necessitate your jumping to conclusions, nor your needing to attempt to teach manners to others on the Internet. I am 49 now, Faern, and neither need, nor appreciate your unasked for defense of Jan, nor your correction of me, PARTICULARLY when you close out with "I know you didn't mean anything..." WELL, then, if YOU can discern that, why do you feel the need to correct me or attempt to teach me, or anyone else proper Netiquette???

I consider YOUR post to be "Not Nice..."

so does that mean that i am not going to recieve anything from you as well?
that's fine, you can think i'm not nice i'm ok with that, it's a shame though because your posts seem so angry and i have defended you to other people before in regards to other tribes, unknowingly to you-
                                      but this is better-
it's true, i could have worded my post better- but whatever i could have said would have seemingly been taken the wrong way by you because it was an opinion.
have a nice life maddy, you and your 49 years going strong

                                        Tue, July 25, 2006 - 3:57 PM
Faern, I've sent you two card so far. My original card, as well as the two parter with Mine and Jan's portions completed.
I cannot send you anything more, because we are STILL waiting for Jan to send ANYTHING.

How you choose to read my communications is NOT my problem. If you read angry, that is YOUR intrerpretation. That I do not sugar coat clear English is also NOT my problem. Anyone with a dictionary, who is not overly Politically correct or overly sensitive, can read and understand without putting additional meanings to plain English.

And, for someone who is SO concerned with how things are apparently worded, and how things not worded properly can be SO taken out of context, I find it hilarious for you to then use it as an excuse for your own sorry, bossy wording...Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!!!

I DO have a NICE life, Faern, and HAVE had one for a great many years. All the more reason to point out that unrequested manners lessons from one not too well versed in that which they are attempting to instruct others about, are neither needed nor requested by me.

But hey, you go girl! Someone may be so sadly deficient in knowing how to write, much less read a post without attempting to put their own personal spin on it (especially when it is not directed at them), they may find your assistance invaluable.

Going strong, with no slowing down in sight, thank you~

this is so funny to me-
i know perfectly well how i am wording things-
i wasn't choosing to read your communications in any way- my wording in this instance is completely intentional-

you are correct maddy- i should not have bothered with you or this at all , that was my mistake- i am able to admit that.

                                          - i do not sugar coat either, i can read and comprehend with the best of them- i unfortunately chose to be a messenger in a situation that is so blown out of proportion now it doesn't even matter anymore-

you don't know me, and gladly so-
you can condescend all you like it seems to be your strong suit but in no way am i going to take you seriously
i am the pot, the kettle, the stone and the glass

Actually, I should correct myself by distinguishing Maddy's contradictory and, at times, aggressive posts have made me leave this tribe. I can't particpate because I am fighting my own illness and I don't want someone to mention "...short of my death..." over a post card exchange. I joined this tribe because it was a positive way for me to stay focused in and touch when I was starting to get too sick to do much activity. Did you consider how that statement reads to someone like myself?
        • If anyone reading this is so full of their own sense of indignation and attitude that they, too are compelled to formally announce their departure:

Were you picked on in school, and became so sensitive as a result? Or are you still living at home with mommy and daddy, and just don't deal with society past your friends on MySpace?
Welcome to reality. You can get over yourself, because you sure don't need to get over me...

          HEY JAN!
Just a note to let you know your postcard arrived today. I hope to get it off to its final home end of the week.

You DID get the completed postcard I sent you, I hope. It was fun combining both images to send you the completed card.
Hope the eye is healing quickly. You'll know you're doing good when your night vision improves. I had eye surgery about 7 years ago, and it took almost 6 months before my night vision was good enough for me to consider driving after dark. Get well soon!
